Master plan for territory development in the Burnakovskaya lowland area

We would like to tell you about our new project - the development of an urban planning concept (master plan) for territory development in the Burnakovskaya lowland area.

The territory is located in the Moscow region of Nizhny Novgorod, it greets a picturesque Volga river view and its opposite bank with lakes and quarries. There has been located an oil depot which is not functioning now. Nearly a third of the territory is currently not used and is already overgrown with trees and shrubs, and among the objects that operate for their intended purpose only the boiler room can be noted. At the same time, Shukhov's unique riveted oil reservoirs are preserved on the territory, some of them are more than 100 years old. The proximity to industrial facilities, the Trans-Siberian Railway, as well as the Sormovskaya TPP, imposes serious restrictions on the design area.

Citywide context cannot be ignored in the process of territory reorganization. Working on planning solutions we considered the prospects for the development of neighboring territories and the formation of all fragments’ connectivity. Thus, two main attractions were identified: Volga’s embankment and Burnakovskaya lowland Lake. In our project proposal it is planned to improve these zones and ensure unhindered access to them for dwellers of the district. It is also planned to form a residential area divided into quarters and connected with the help of intra-quarter driveways and a pedestrian boulevard.

In the master plan we pay special attention to scenarios for the territory usage, form a system of landscaped public spaces – boulevards, miniparks, city squares – diversed in content and purpose. We are planning to breathe new life into some of the oldest Shukhov reservoirs, re-profiling them into public facilities - unique land-marks of the territory; we are thinking over a system of bike paths and the concept of using a multi-level embankment; we form the public utility service program of the territory.

We are developing the master plan that considers the analysis of the context, planning and land property restrictions, as well as the identified valuable elements of the territory. Ongoing results of the work were presented at the Architectural Council under the Ministry of Urban Planning and Development of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
